Dorking Colts 24-17 ZIS Colts
On the Friday night we played their colts team under floodlights. Several of our u16 team played up into our colts.
ZIS started off much the stronger and played with power and pace down the slope and with the breeze at their back. They had several skilful players and played a fast offload game. They scored two first half tries. We rallied as the half wore on, and scored late on with Finn Rennles finishing off a team move in the corner.
With the elements in our favour (and perhaps the ZIS legs a little travel-weary), we were much stronger in the second half. We scored three tries, the pick of which was a rumbustious run down the wing by Archie Coldicott. The Swiss defenders were queueing up to be fended off by Archie’s powerful hand. He blasted at least 3 defenders to score in the corner. Fittingly, ZIS scored the last try and the match finished 24-17 to Dorking.
Dorking U16 67-7 ZIS U16
So to Saturday lunchtime and the curtain raiser for for the 1st team match against Chingford. It was a great opportunity for the lads playing on the 1st team pitch.
With the elements still on the chilly side we took to the big field to take on ZIS U16s.
This was a more one-sided affair and our class and experience told as we ran in 7 unanswered tries. The first was from Finn Rennles as he finished of a move following a scrum. ZIS were then powerless to stop Harry Thompson from short distance. Toby Arnett was next to score with a pick up and drive from the base of the scrum. Archie Coldicott then scored in the corner with one of his trademark finishes.
Thompson added to his tally with a second and then we scored with perhaps the highlight of the match. A sweeping move starting in our 22, saw the ball move through several pairs of hands and Raich Hudson was there to touch down. This epitomised the skill and desire in the team as there were several players on hand who could have taken that last pass. Arnett scored the last of the half after a good offload in the preceding move. The scoring was punctuated by a ZIS penalty and Matt Gwyther added four conversions to leave it 43-3 at half time.
We made numerous changes at half time but out dominance was still evident. We added four more tries, the first following a melee near their line and scrum half Jack Parkinson was the most alert to dart for a gap. Joe Stone then scored his debut try for the team with a powerful finish. Hector McLennan sprinted down the wing to score – not bad for a lock filling in as a winger! The last score saw Stone cleverly draw the defence to put in Alfie White for his first try for us. Gwyther added two conversions.
ZIS did score a try through their talented centre and remained committed to the end. However, we had far too much experience for them and it was pleasing to see the nature of the team tries that we scored. It was also a good opportunity to give debuts to some of our new squad members.
The score finished 67-7.
There was a great reception for the team as they left the pitch from the spectators, including several senior player, which made their day. One Club!! Thank you!
